As Memorial Day approaches, we are inclined to reflect upon the true meaning of the national holiday. Memorial Day was originally established as Decoration Day in 1868, as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of soldiers who had perished during the Civil War with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Declaration Day should be celebrated on May 30th, because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to include all who have died in American Wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a national holiday to be observed on the last Monday in May.
Day Air is proud to support the VA Medical Center and all Veterans; which is why we have been the primary financial institution of the Dayton VA since 1982. We are honored to provide Veterans and VA employees with our services and expertise to ensure their financial well-being. Having a branch on the Dayton VA Hospital campus allows us to be actively involved in the community and participate in events hosted. If you are looking for a fun and educational way to honor Memorial Day this year stop by the 12th Annual Patriot Freedom Festival, a free two day event put on by The American Veterans Heritage Center. The event includes guided historical tours of the 149 year old grounds, food vendors, petting zoo & other children’s activities, and arts & crafts. Admission and parking are FREE!
