Day Air Credit Union loves our veterans! In fact, we love our veterans so much that we have had a branch on the Dayton VA Medical Center’s campus since 1982. This allows us to serve as a financial and community partner to those who have served, their families and those who care for them. Although we honor our veterans every day, Veteran’s Day is an especially important occasion to celebrate and pay homage to the men and women who have sacrificed for our freedom.
On Sunday, November 11th, you can enjoy an entire days’ worth of activities without leaving the historic on hundred and fifty one year old Dayton VA Medical Center campus! The day will be kicked off with a free pancake breakfast for veterans from 7am-9am in the multipurpose room of building 305. Volunteers will be serving pancakes, sausage, fruit, juice, milk and coffee.
After breakfast, you can head to the Miami Valley Military History Museum in building 120. The museum will be accessible for extended hours from 9am-5pm and serving light refreshments. The museum is a hidden treasure, filled with artifacts and memorabilia from all branches of service and time periods throughout American history. The museum operates independently of any government funding by a group of volunteers who are passionate about the preservation of America’s heroes and fostering of patriotism.
In the museum’s foyer, you will notice a Veterans Wall ornamented with photos of United States Armed Forces who were submitted to be honored by their loved ones. You can honor your veteran too by submitting a photo, the veterans’ full name, rank or rate, branch of service, and when known, the years they served to curator@mvmhm.com.
Exhibits on display at the museum include:
- Revolutionary War
- Indian Wars
- Spanish-American War
- World War I
- World War II
- Korea
- Vietnam
- The Cold War
- Operation Desert Storm
- Enduring Freedom
- Iraqi Freedom
- Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW) such as Lebanon, Grenada and Panama
This year Veterans Day will mark the 100th year anniversary of the end of World War I. In celebration of this milestone, the Miami Valley Military History Museum allowed Day Air Credit Union to partner with them on rededicating the World War I Memorial Garden in the VA Grotto. The rededication ceremony will be from 11am-12pm. If you have never explored the Grotto or the Miami Valley History Museum, this would be the perfect opportunity to do so.
For those who prefer a more controlled environment, there will also be an indoor Veteran’s Day ceremony in the hospital lobby (building 330) from 11am-12pm. After both of the ceremonies, Skyline Chili will be available in the hospital lobby for lunch. We hope to see you there!
