Did you ever shake your head at your Mother’s advice?
“Don’t make that face…it will freeze that way!”
“Keep your elbows off the table.”
“Don’t talk with your mouth full, you’ll choke.”
“Always wear clean underwear in case you are in an accident.”
“Save for a rainy day.”
I think I have tested each of these pieces of advice over my adult life. They were all dead on!
I have frown lines from frowning too often.
I have knocked over cups, silverware and a whole bowl of peas.
I have choked on my food while talking and laughing.
I was in an accident and was thankful I had dressed appropriately.
I’ve had many a rainy day!
The most important thing that we can teach our children (and most adults need reminding) is to, “hope for the best but prepare for the worst.”
You really can’t go through life believing nothing bad will ever happen to you. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t live life to the fullest or avoid calculated risks. I say go for it…but plan to have a rainy day.
My friend recently said this to a college student and the student didn’t know what the saying meant. It made us feel old … but also sad. Has this young adult not been told that things can sometimes go wrong? Mom and Dad might not hand you a debit or credit card and say spend away. You might not get the first job you apply for … or the first 20 jobs for that matter. You might get ill.
My latest accident and rainy day reminded me of the importance of a plan.
